How to grow your hair out

When all you want is long hair, growing your hair out can be as painful as listening to a Justin Bieber CD over and over again while hungover. In other words: you just desperately want it to be over. But it needn’t be a tough time, not if you know the rules anyway…

Make your hair strong from the beginning

While you’re growing your hair out you don’t want it to be a brittle mess that keeps breaking at every chance. To stop this, make sure you’re eating the right foods to encourage healthy hair. Dr Michael Rich from Melbourne’s enRich clinic says, “A healthy diet is important for healthy hair and should include fresh fruits, vegetables and fish.”  You heard the man – sort your diet out pronto!

Nourish your hair from the outside

Mark Hampton, Global Hair Ambassador for TONI&GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe says, if your hair is prone to breakage when you’re trying to grow it out, try and change your shampoo routine and invest in shampoos that are specifically designed for damaged hair. Also incorporate a nourishing mask in your hair regime from time to time. If you’re heat styling make sure to always use a heat protection spray to protect your hair.

Nourish your hair from the inside

How do you show your hair some TLC from within? “Most people use nutritional supplements,” says Peita Handel from Fusion Health. “This ensures the appropriate nutrients are present for hair health but they don’t stimulate hair growth.” Handel says an alternative could be herbal medicines. These help revitalise the scalp to promote hair growth, condition and strength, and can help to regenerate resting hair follicles.

Get regular trims

It might be counterintuitive to cut your hair when you’re trying to grow it out but Hampton says to make sure you’re still having regular trims at each stage of the growing out process to keep your hair healthy. Also he adds, “Consider shaping the back to help the front catch up.”

Accessories are your best friend

Battling the boredom that comes with waiting for your hair to grow out can be alleviated, it just takes a little research and imagination. Hampton says, “Invest in accessories to help those trouble bad hair days, and take the time in learning how to style it though some how-to videos and by seeing how some short-haired celebs style their locks.”
