Have you been pooing wrong this whole time?

Going to the toilet should be a straightforward affair – go to the toilet, sit down, do your business and away you go. However according to microbiologist and author of Charming Bowels it seems we shouldn’t actually be sitting but squatting when we’re on the loo.

Enders cites numerous studies that says doing a poo is more efficient when we squat. The closure mechanism of the gut isn’t designed to open up completely when we sit down or stand – it’s like a kinked hose. Squatting on the other hand means that the angle is more even and straight and puts less pressure on our bottoms. If you don’t see yourself climbing onto the toilet seat and squatting any time soon, try sitting with your feet on a little stool and leaning foward. Bringing your knees closer to your torso actually helps with the forces required for a bowel movement.

Enders recently told The Guardian: ‘1.2 billion people around the world who squat have almost no incidence of diverticulitis and fewer problems with piles. We in the west, on the other hand, squeeze our gut tissue until it comes out of our bottoms.”
