You may not like sweating a lot but did you know that it is one of the most effective ways to keep your body heat in check! Body heat is also known as heat stress. The temperature of our body needs to lie between the normal range of 36.5–37.5 degrees Celsius (97.7–99.5 degrees Fahrenheit). However, sometimes such factors as hot and humid weather, too much sun, tight clothing, strenuous workouts etc. may raise the temperature of body to a level that even sweating can’t cool it down. If you do not take proper measures to bring down your body heat, it may lead to heat stroke which is quite risky. Here are some home remedies to reduce body heat so that you may not have to suffer from heat stroke.

Natural Remedies for Body Heat Reduction

When you suffer from increased body heat, you can have such symptoms as weakness, lethargy, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, excessive sweating and a rapid heartbeat. Dehydration can be called a cause as well as an outcome of raised body heat. So, it is always recommended to drink water in such circumstances. If you have been in the sun for longer, move to a shady place or some other place that has lots of cool air and shade too, like in an air conditioned room. Sponging with cool water is perhaps the next thing that should be done to get rid of body heat. Here are some more remedies to reduce body heat.

Cool Water Therapy reduces Body Heat instantly

This is natural, water reduces heat. In fact, water is the only way that can bring down high temperatures. Whatever remedy you are going to use to reduce body heat, it will include water in some or the other form. But to use water in its pure form, what should you do? Here’s the answer:

  • As soon as you realize that the temperature of your body has increased to an abnormal level, grab a glass full of cool water and drink it. If that doesn’t quench your thirst, have one more glass of water.
  • Now take a foot bath and fill it with water till halfway. Add some ice cubes to this water. Soak your feet in this tub and relax.
  • Keep on drinking water frequently till your body heat is reduced to normal levels. If you can not have so much of plain water, have some substitute like the ones that have been given in the below remedies to reduce body heat.

Drink Coconut Water to reduce Body Heat

Coconut water is super hydrating. It is low in calories and is cholesterol free. So you can have as much of coconut water as you like. Having more potassium than four bananas, the natural sweet nutty flavored coconut water also balances electrolytes in your body. Thus, it is a good remedy for dehydration which almost always accompanies body heat. It helps prevent and treats the loss of too much body water by replenishing body fluids.

  • Get a tender green coconut
  • Have its water directly from the coconut (with the help of a straw, of course!) or after taking it out in a glass
  • If required, have more coconut water after about half an hour or so.
  • You can consume water from 3-4 coconuts in a day when you suffer from body heat. This water is harmless and is easily digestible.

Lemon water also reduces Body Heat effectively

Many researches have shown that vitamin C or ascorbic acid helps human body respond to heat stress positively. It not only reduces the likelihood of developing heat-related illnesses like heat rash and heat exhaustion, but also treats heat rashes that are already present on your body. When you take proper amounts of vitamin C daily, you are able to shorten the length of time taken by your body to adjust to a new hotter environment. This might be due to the reason that vitamin C helps sweat glands not to get tired soon. It has also been shown to lower body temperature effectively. What else than lemon can be the best source of having vitamin C, especially when you need to lower down your body heat.

Get this:

  • Lemon- ½ -1 (depending upon the size)
  • Water
  • Honey- 1-2 tsp
  • Salt- a pinch of it

Do this:

  • Squeeze the lemon juice into the glass of water.
  • Add honey and salt to this.
  • Stir well and have it.
  • Repeat 3-4 times a day.

Have Watermelon to reduce Body Heat the delicious way

When it comes to water based fruits, nothing can beat a watermelon. And it’s delicious too. It is 95% water! What more can you have in place of water! So, because you need to have lots of water during the time when your body temperature is high, you can depend upon watermelon when you get bored from drinking water and its substitutes. You can eat water, in the form of watermelon! It will also give you a lots of iron, potassium, beta-carotene and vitamin C.

  • Get a watermelon.
  • Cut it into slices and have 1-2 slices or even more if you feel like.
  • Store the rest in your fridge.
  • Have the cooled watermelon slices now and then to counter your body heat.
  • If you don’t like eating them, blend the slices of watermelon to get a smoothie and have it with a dash of lemon juice and some mint leaves!

Cucumber and its Juice can help reduce your Body Heat

Apart from watermelon, cucumber is yet another food that helps you beat the heat! With its high water content, this summer vegetable having a fresh and crunchy taste can help you reduce body heat. Because it also has diuretic properties, cucumber also helps flush toxins out of your body as well as maintains healthy tissue and skin. It is extremely low in calories with minimal amounts of sugar, carbohydrates and fats and has high levels of vitamin B, phosphorus, calcium, zinc and other minerals. Therefore, you can have this watery vegetable whenever you think your body is high on temperature.

  • Peel, cut and blend cucumber pieces to make a fresh cucumber juice. Add a dash of lemon juice or have it as it is. Both ways, it will reduce your body heat.
  • Slice cucumber and make a salad. Have the crunchy vegetable to replenish water in your body
  • You can also top your sandwich and burger with cucumber slices.
  • Whip the slices of cucumber to make a quick spread. Add some lemon, mint and yogurt to make it more flavorful and cool.

Radish also cools down Body Temperature

Yet another crunchy salad vegetable, radishes are not as popular as cucumbers but they are, in no way, lesser effective in reducing body heat. Radishes have a very high water content, almost similar to cucumbers, and are also a rich source of vitamin C. How vitamin C is good in reducing body heat has been mentioned in an earlier remedy that talked about lemon for body heat reduction. Additionally, this vitamin is rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A rich source of potassium, radish can also help lower the risk of kidney stones and stroke.

  • Make leafy green salad by adding radish slices.
  • If you can stand the smell of radish, you can even blend radish pieces along with some mint and lemon juice to make radish juice. Have it with a dash of black salt.

Use Mint and Peppermint to reduce Body Heat

It is a known fact, both mint and peppermint have amazing cooling and relaxing properties. Additionally, you get refreshed due to their aroma when you are tired and exhausted due to raised body temperatures. In summers, mint is used to relieve indigestion and inflammation and thus you can have these traditional herbs that are used by herbalists world over to soothe mind and body. While you can have mint or peppermint in a variety of ways, having it as chilled tea would be most beneficial when you try to reduce body heat!

Get this:

  • Mint or peppermint leaves (fresh or dried)- Few sprigs if fresh and 1-2 tsp if dried
  • Water- 1-2 cups
  • Ice cubes- as per your requirement (make it chilled! Remember, your body temperature is high!)
  • Lemon juice- ½- 1 tsp
  • Honey (optional)- 1-2 tsp

Do this:

  • Boil the water and add mint or peppermint leaves to this.
  • Keep boiling for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Put off the flame, cover and let it steep till the time it cools down completely.
  • Strain and add ice cubes to this. In fact, you can also keep it in refrigerator to chill it up.
  • Add a dash of lemon juice and have it
  • You might also make it a little sweet by adding 1-2 tsp of honey.
  • Have such cooling tea 3-4 times a day.

Soak in Cool Peppermint Water

If you so like, you can even soak in soothing cooling peppermint water to lower down your body temperature.

Get this

  • Peppermint leaves- 4-5 ounces (about 150 grams)
  • Water- 1 pot for boiling the leaves
  • Cool water- to fill the bathtub

Do this:

  • Bring the pot of water to a boil.
  • Add peppermint leaves to this and simmer for about 15 minutes
  • Strain and let the water cool down.
  • Fill the bathtub with cool water.
  • Add the peppermint infused water to the bath water.
  • Soak yourself in this water for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Relax!

Have Pomegranate to reduce Body Heat

Referred to as ‘divine fruit’, pomegranate has been traditionally used by many ancient medicines like Ayurveda to treat a variety of bodily conditions including body heat. The water laden pulp surrounding each seed of pomegranate might explain why it is used to reduce body heat. However, high water content is not the only advantage of pomegranate. This fruit is a rich source of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and also has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. It not only reduces body heat but is also useful for people suffering from low blood pressure.

  • Have pomegranate fruit seeds while enjoying its heavenly taste.
  • Make juice by blending pomegranate seeds and drink it, 3-4 times a day.

Drink Sugarcane Juice to reduce Body Heat

Sugarcane is loaded with natural glucose and electrolytes. So, if you feel lethargic and weak due to heat stress, grab a glass of sugarcane juice because it is an instant energy booster. It miraculously cools down your body, even during harsh summers. It also fights dehydration effectively due to the presence of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and manganese. It is a perfect drink to replenish lost electrolytes and water. What more, even if you are diabetic, you can have sugarcane juice without worries due to its low glycaemic index!

  • Have plain sugarcane juice. It is naturally sweet and very tasty and thus no need to add anything else to this juice!

Use Poppy Seeds to reduce Body Heat

Poppy seed, an oilseed derived from the opium poppy, is used as condiment in cooking. These seeds have nutty and pleasant taste but are entirely free from any sinister side effects of poppy plant products such as opium poppy. So, you can have them without worries. They are loaded with various plant derived chemical compounds and have anti-oxidant, disease preventing and health benefiting properties. They also have a cooling effect on your body and effectively regulate your body temperature which only helps in reducing body heat.

Get this:

  • Poppy seeds- 1-2 tbsp
  • Salt- a pinch of it

Do this:

  • Grind the poppy seeds using a little water to get a paste like consistency.
  • Add salt to this.
  • Use it as a spread
  • In fact, you can add any other cooling herb or spice to it when grinding to make it more flavorful. For example, add a few mint leaves and a dash of lemon juice to poppy seeds paste and use it as a delicious spread. You can also add a little ginger and pepper to make it a little spicy!

Drink Buttermilk to reduce Body Heat

Buttermilk, a byproduct of the butter churning process, is a tremendously healthy drink. If you had been under the impression that it is a mixture of butter and milk and thus fattening, clear your doubts and know that it is the water content that is left behind after the butter is churned out of curd.  Not only it is loaded with calcium, B-vitamins, and potassium, it also contains probiotics that supports digestive system and strengthens your immune system. Buttermilk has amazing cooling properties that help reduce body heat. In Ayurveda, buttermilk is recommended for per-and post-menopausal women to get relief from hot flashes. For men (and women too) who suffer from high metabolism and high body temperature, buttermilk proves to be a boon to reduce body heat.

  • Drink a glass of buttermilk with your breakfast daily, especially in summers to avoid heat strokes.
  • When suffering from heat stress. Have a glass of butter milk 2-3 times a day.
  • You can also have a glass of buttermilk after your meals for proper digestion of foods and to keep your body temperature in check.

Sabja Seeds aka Basil Seeds to reduce Body Heat

Sabja seeds are the seeds of sweet basil or the Thai Holy Basil. The seeds have many phyto-chemicals and polyphenolic flavonoids in them such as orientin, vicenin and other antioxidants. The essential oils like eugenol, citronellol, limonene, citral and terpineol present in these seeds make them healthy and beneficial for many conditions especially related to acidity, indigestion and skin problems. Rich in beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin A and vitamin K, sabja seeds also have minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, calcium, folates, and magnesium.  These seeds have been traditionally used by Ayurveda to lower body heat. In fact, in India, during summers, sabja seeds are added to cool drinks like falooda, rooh afza, nimbu pani and sherbet.

Get this:

  • Sabja seeds- 1-2 tsp
  • Lemon juice- from 1 lemon
  • Cold water- 1 glass
  • Sugar or honey- as per taste

Do this:

  • Soak the sabja seeds in water for 30 minutes. If you see lumps forming with seeds, add more water. After soaking, a transparent gel like membrane forms around these sabja seeds.
  • Take the glass of cold water and add lemon juice to this.
  • Add honey or sugar whatever you are using.
  • Stir well to mix all the things.
  • Top it up with soaked sabja seeds.
  • Give it a stir and have it.

Cool Sandalwood to reduce Body Heat

Sandalwood is an aromatic wood with soothing and cooling properties. When used externally, sandalwood oil or sandalwood paste has a calming and cooling effect not only on body but also on mind. You can use sandalwood to reduce body heat and also to relieve fever and burns. In fact, it is also helpful in stopping excessive sweating.

Get this:

  • Sandalwood powder- 2 tbsp Or Sandalwood oil- few drops
  • Water- enough to make paste

Do this:

  • Add a little water to sandalwood powder to make a paste.
  • Apply this paste on your forehead, chest, armpits and back.
  • Leave it to dry. Wash it after it dries. In fact, if you don’t wash it then also it won’t harm you. If possible leave it on your body. You will not need to apply any fragrance when you use sandalwood paste on your body.
  • Alternatively, you can rub a few drops of sandalwood oil on your forehead and chest.
  • If this feels too strong to your senses, add a few drops of sandalwood oil to a carrier oil like coconut, olive or jojoba oil and rub it on your forehead and chest to lower down your body temperature.

As soon as you apply sandalwood on your body, you will feel the cooling effect on your skin!

Eat Banana, it reduces Body Heat

Banana has three natural sugars- sucrose, fructose and glucose and also a lots of fiber. Thus, this tasty fruit gives you an instant boost of energy. Not only this, bananas can also help prevent and treat a number of diseases and body conditions including depression, anemia, PMS, blood pressure, brain power, constipation, hangovers, heartburn, morning sickness, ulcers, stress, stroke, warts etc. It also helps you lose weigh and regulate body temperature. It is a cooling fruit. In fact, in Thailand, it is believed that if an expecting mother eats bananas, she will give birth to a baby having a cool temperature!

  • Eat 1-2 bananas daily, preferably in the morning. This will not only give you a much needed energy boost for the whole day but also will help prevent your body from getting heat stress.
  • You may also make a healthy breakfast drink using banana. Add banana slices, yogurt, a little coconut oil or flax oil. Blend them all together and make a thick frosty banana smoothie. When having it to reduce body heat, use all the ingredients after chilling them!

Tips to Prevent Heat Stress

  • As far as possible, avoid exposure to excessive heat and humidity.
  • Wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing. They help your body stay cool. Tight fitting clothes increase your body temperature.
  • In summers, wear cotton or similar breathable cloth material. This will not prevent sweating and help evaporate the sweat easily. Remember, sweating regulates your temperature.
  • As far as possible, stay in a cool, well-ventilated area. When going out, try to remain in shade or use hats, umbrella etc. to avoid harsh sun rays.
  • Drink plenty of water everyday. This helps prevents dehydration and regulates body temperature.
  • Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. They lead to dehydration and also affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature.
  • Plan your workouts in the mornings or late evenings when it is comparatively cooler.  Afternoon workouts are a no-no if you often suffer from heat stress.
  • Avoid hot and spicy foods and also fatty and fried foods.
  • Choose your drinks wisely. Sport beverages laden with sodium and sugar, can actually lead to dehydration. Even extremely cold foods and drinks like ice cream can actually play havoc on your digestion and sweating. This hampers body’s natural cooling mechanism. Instead, choose healthy drinks and foods like coconut water, lemon juice, watermelon or melon slices etc.
