Researchers at the UK’s Southampton University reviewed earlier studies and discovered that people who drink two cups of coffee every day are 44 per cent less likely to develop liver damage caused by excessive drinking.

Interestingly, filtered coffee had the greatest benefit and the findings increased to 57 per cent for three cups but dropped to 22 per cent for one cup of coffee per day.

According to lead researcher Dr Oliver Kennedy, coffee contains hundreds of chemical compounds and it’s not yet known which of these is responsible for protecting the liver.

But experts warn that simply drinking coffee isn’t enough to counteract other unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Samantha Heller from NYU’s Langone Medical Center told Reuters that “although coffee contains compounds that have antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory properties, drinking a few cups of coffee a day cannot undo the systematic damage that is the result of being overweight or obese, sedentary, excessive alcohol consumption, or drastically mitigate an unhealthy diet.”
