1. Surfing

Can you think of surfing without thinking of Hawaii? Not likely! Surfing is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness and also strengthens your core (read: killer abs), back, legs and shoulders. It’s a great way to get a total body workout.

2. Stand-up paddle-boarding

Everyone from Jennifer Hawkins to Kate Hudson are big fans of stand-up paddle-boarding. If you’re not familiar with it, paddle-boarding involves standing on a surfboard with a paddle to help you move around the water. It requires a lot of balance so is great for strength building, plus it really gives the abs a work out.

3. Swimming

If there’s one thing you have to do in Hawaii it’s hit the water for a swim. Luckily, the health benefits of swimming are numerous. It’s a great way to get your heart rate up, but it’s low impact so virtually anyone can do it. Swimming also builds endurance, muscle strength and is a great form ofcardio. Not only that, it’ll tone you up from your head to your toes as it’s an all over body workout.

4. Hiking

Hitting the great outdoors is virtually compulsory in Hawaii. One of the big attractions of the islands are the various trails you can hit to go hiking. As an aerobic exercise, hiking is a great cardiovascular workout and can really get your heart going. Being in the great outdoors also gives you a good dose of Vitamin D, and let’s face it, it’s pretty relaxing being amongst nature.

5. Shopping

No we’re not kidding! Hawaii’s got a pretty mean shopping district, which means it’s a great place to do some retail therapy. Shopping’s been proven to release mood-lifting endorphin which in turns helps boost the immune system and keeps the brain agile. Not only that, it’s a sneaky way to get a cardio workout. A recent British survey found that on average women walk approximately 290 kilometers per year shopping. That’s equivalent to almost 7 marathons!
